When we look at our blue planet from space, no borders can be seen. There is no visible difference between nations, people or languages. This is how we at the WCSJ2013 would like to see our world.
The Helsinki conference will bring together journalists from all continents to engage in a unique dialogue. Everybody will be seated equally in the same rooms in sessions of equal significance, with no division between east or west, north or south, nor between the so-called developing world and others.
We hope that we can hear the global voice of science journalists. What do we have in common? What separates us? Moderated by top-level, seasoned colleagues around the world, these sessions offer an excellent opportunity to build bridges and to get a fresh insight into topical issues in different countries.
How many ways are there to get your message across? Energy issues, lifestyles, medicine, physics… crucial for every society. What is the role of mentoring? How are science journalists staying in contact with each other and boosting their careers? What is the role of associations? How can you build networks to benefit your career? And how can you earn your living or make some extra money with your work?
These sessions of 40 minutes will give the world conference its truly global vibe. Sessions go across the globe and accross the different perspectives and traditions of science journalism. They will be shared via social media and give participants a possibility to react, debate and re-send; you can join the discussion even from Antarctica!
Tricks, hints, connections and friends, coupled with new ideas, study trips and magic of the midnight sun – this is the spirit of Helsinki, for eveyone from everywhere.
