Work and recreation combine at 8th World Conference
in Helsinki at Midsummer 2013
The first details of the 8th World Conference of Science Journalists in Helsinki 2013 have been revealed in February after meetings of the organisers. The Finnish hosts are determined to offer cultural experiences. The conference takes place right after the Midsummer festivities. It is a unique time of the year in Helsinki with summer nights nearly as bright as the days.
“This will be a world conference where having fun is a crucial part of the programme”, says Ms. Satu Lipponen, Chair of the organising committee. Achieving good intellectual results by having fun is not far-fetched, she explains, and points to the fact that Finland has an excellent reputation in education according to PISA – the International Programme for International Student Assessment.
“Our children start the school at the age of seven. Learning by doing with playfulness included is believed to be one of the strong points of our knowledge economy. Our aim is for an inspiring, relaxed and fun atmosphere in Helsinki WCSJ2013 – as the cornerstone for the quality professional programme.”
The Finnish Association of Science Journalists and Editors has about one thousand members from all fields of science. “We want to network with conference delegates and show the best parts of our culture. The programme will have a special emphasis on arts, design, computer games, in other words all the things that involve creativity. You will meet hundreds of members of our association, aspiring future science journalists, top-level scientists and colleagues from different countries”, Ms. Lipponen promises and says: “Times are hard for science journalists in Finland and all over the world. We want to address our professional questions in depth. This is the core of the conference – but what will make this conference a must-attend is its emphasis on creativity”.
Mr. Vesa Niinikangas, President of the World Federation of Science Journalists, says that the World conferences have since 1992 gathered thousands of science journalists to change ideas and learn from each other. He also mentions the SjCOOP programme (Science Journalism COOPeration), initiated 2006 in Africa, which is a unique effort to train science journalists in developing countries.
“The basic idea behind these training programmes is very simple”, Mr. Niinikangas continues. “It is: learning from colleagues. When journalists coach journalists the profession develops in two ways. The experienced transfer their knowledge and the art of journalism to younger ones who in turn bring their enthusiasm and curiosity to this interaction.”
“Our theme in Helsinki is critical questioning in the public sphere. This also applies to the WCSJ2013 conference itself. We encourage our colleagues around the world to ask each other critical questions about our profession and to find solutions together”, says Mr. Niinikangas.
